How to Play the Andar Bahar Game

In this game, there is a dealer at the centre who has a standard fifty-two card deck. The rest of the players will surround him to play the game. There needs to be at least two players for the game to start. To start the game, players need to place their bets on Andar or Bahar. Two things should be noted here. One, players can choose a side, but they do have to pick up a number. This is the number of the card; the suit does not matter in this situation.

So, the primary aim is to select the side where this number will pop up. As the game proceeds, the dealer picks a card and places it face up. You can choose to bet on this card as well. Then the dealer proceeds to select twelve more cards and places it alternatingly on each side of the first. Since it would be hard to decide where the second card would be placed, the rule is if it is a Club or a Spade, then it goes to Andar and if it is a Heart or a Diamond it goes to Bahar.

For example, if the second card is a Five of Hearts, then it goes to Bahar. In that case, whatever the third card is, it will be put in Andar. The suits are essential only during the second pick. After that, the things that matter is the number and the side it lands up in.

So, if you placed your bet on the left side but your card ends up in the right side you lose that round. But if you bet correctly, then you are going to win the round. However, your game relies on what the first card is going to be. If you want a strategy, it will involve guessing what the first card is going to be. The game is won and lost when the first card gets revealed. Once everyone has either won or lost, that round of Katti ends.

The Traditional Setup of Call Break

It is a trick-taking card game where every player’s objective is to secure as many tricks as possible or at least the number that they bid before play began. Usually, a Call Break game will consist of four players, and there are no partnerships.

You can use any standard 52-card pack to play the game. It’s worth noting that Spades are always the trump. The other suits have no value except during play unless trumped by a Spade. The cards of each suit are usually ranked like this: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, two from highest to lowest. Each player is dealt 13 cards, to begin with, and then according to their cards they can make a call on how many hands they think they can secure during the game.

Rules of Playing Call Break Online & Offline

The rules of Call Break remain the same regardless of where you are playing it.

The dealer is usually chosen at random before the first round begins. The dealer changes every round, and the game is generally played in an anti-clockwise direction.

The person next to the dealer makes the first call based on whatever hand they have received. At this point, if any of the players notice the following things, then the cards must be dealt again:

1. They have collected all the four Aces.
2. They have not received any Ace or King or Queen.
3. They have not received any Spades.

Players have to play the card according to the suit being played during the current trick. In case they do not have a card belonging to the suit that is being played, then a trump card can be played. However, that does not necessarily mean you will win the trick. You have to make sure while playing the trump that no one can overtrump your card and win it instead of you.

For example, the player next to the dealer plays an Ace of Hearts. Then every player will have to play a card from the same suit unless they don’t have any. In that case, they can choose to play the trump. Since Ace is the card with the highest value across all suits, the player will win the hand unless someone has to use a trump card.

You must play a higher value card if you have one than the cards that have already been played during the hand. It is compulsory to do so, and if you do not have any higher value cards, you can play any card you want to. The top value card wins each trick played during that hand unless a trump is played.

Scoring in Call Break Online

The scoring system of Call Break is based on points. The more hands you win, the higher your score will be. However, it also depends on the bid that you placed at the beginning of the game. If you secure fewer hands than what you bid for, you will lose an equivalent amount of points. While, if you obtain the exact number of tricks then you will gain the same. For each extra trick or hand that you win past your bid amount, you will earn 0.1 for every extra hand.

For example, let’s assume you bid that you will secure four hands at the beginning of the game. If you got only two hands, then your score after that round will be -4.0. But, if you won 4 tricks, then your score will be 4.0. If you bid four but won 7 rounds, then your score will be 4.0+0.1×3=4.3. This is the usual scoring method used in most Call Break online versions. However, different iterations of the same exist offline depending on where it is being played.

Whether you are playing Call Break online or offline, the rules remain the same. So, you can follow some tricks to maximise your score.

It is crucial that you take a calculated risk when it comes to bidding. There is no use bidding an amount you cannot achieve. If you play safe, you will have a positive score, and that is better than taking a higher risk and ending up with a negative score. Since you need to play five rounds before results, there is no point in having an all in or nothing attitude.

Don’t make calls based on a Jack or a Queen. Even though they are higher value cards, you are better off making a bid based on the Aces and Kings that you have in your hand and the trump.

Keep in mind that your bid decides your score. So, it is vital that you make a bid that you can achieve. Remember that any trick can get trumped at any point, so you need to be careful and follow the game. Keeping a mental note of the cards that are being played will allow you to figure out which cards are yet to be played. This will let you figure out which cards you should play to win a trick.

Treat your trump cards as your lifeline. Use them wisely, and you can get away with a lot. But, if you don’t use them well, they will end up as a complete waste.

If any of the hands add up to eight or nine, then it is a natural hand.  Even if the other hand goes up to a total value beyond nine, the dealer does not deal any further. But, if both hands are neither eight nor nine, then it is not a natural hand. In this case, the dealer deals an additional card to each hand.

If the player’s hand’s total value is somewhere between zero to five, then a third card is usually dealt out by the croupier. If the total is six to seven, then the hand stands. For the banker’s side, the banker acts in accordance to how the player’s hand reacted. If the value is between zero to five, the third card is drawn, but for values between six to seven, the side stands. But, if the player pulled the third card, then the banker’s hand changes accordingly.

If the total of the banker’s hand is two or less than that, the side draws a card regardless of what the player’s third card is. If the total is three, then the banker can draw a third card given that the player’s card was not an eight. If the banker’s total is four, the player’s third card should be any between two to seven to draw the banker’s third card. If the sum is five, then the player’s third card has to be within four to seven for the banker to draw its third card. If the total is six, then the banker can pull the third card only if the player’s third card was six or seven. These rules follow the drawing rules according to the tableau.

Now, as a player, you can choose to bet on the punto (player’s side), the banco (banker’s side) or on a tie. If you bet on player’s hand, then you will receive the same money you bet on it. So the payout is 1:1. When you bet on the banker’s side, the casino usually takes a 5%-10% cut depending on where you are playing. So the payout is ideally around 1:0.95. However, when you bet on a tie, the payout is 8:1.

Once the dealer announces which side won with the most points, they collect the lost bets and distribute the winnings to the winners accordingly. If the result is a tie, then the person who placed bets on a tie wins but the bets on players and bankers remain active for the next game. Whoever set bets on anything else apart from a tie cannot retract their bets and will have to wait for the next round to see the outcome.

The card game Paplu is a mixture of all the different versions of Rummy out there. One can find similarities with Gin Rummy and Rummy 500 while playing. Even though it is a wagering game, its popularity is hard to beat.

What is Paplu?

Similar to Rummy 500, Paplu uses 13 cards for each player. Two to eight players can play the game together. Two standard 52 card decks are part of the game. Often, some players use wildcards. Then, the card counts go up to 108. The card count can go up further depending on the number of players. But, each player gets only 13 cards while playing.

For example, if there are four players, don’t be surprised if there are only two decks. Participants take turn dealing cards and deal out 13 cards to each. After they have dealt the hands, the next card on the deck is put up face first. This card denotes the start of the discard pile. On the other side, the rest of the cards are placed face down.

Objectives of the card game Paplu

Each player in the game has to turn the 13 cards in their hand into runs and sets. So, a run is a sequence of cards that are part of the same suit. A set, on the other hand, is made of cards that have the same rank but different suits.

A run usually consists of three or more cards but a set contains three cards only. Sometimes, a set is also termed as a trio or a trail. If there are more than three decks, cards of the same suit and rank can be used to form a set or a run.

As a player, your purpose is to turn as many cards into runs and sets.

For example, if you have a 4 of clubs, 3 of clubs and 5 of clubs, you can arrange them to form a run.

If you have a 9 of spades, 9 of diamonds and a 9 of clubs, you can use it to form a set.

But if you have a 3 of clubs, a 4 of hearts and a 5 of diamonds, you cannot go for a run.  Similarly, if you have a king of spades, a king of hearts but a queen of clubs, it will not make a valid set.

The aim of the game is to discard all the cards in one’s hand. A player can do this by forming runs and sets that we were talking about earlier.

Playing Paplu

At first, you need to assign a dealer. Once they have distributed the first 13 cards, the play begins. The player to the right-hand side of the dealer picks up the top card from the discarded pile or the stockpile.

Both acts of drawing cards and discarding them are mandatory parts of the game. The players must take one card from any of the piles. However, since the discarded pile is face up, other players can see the card that is being picked up. The stockpile stays face down so, some prefer that.

Once you draw a card, go through the cards that you have. Choose one that does not help you in any way. Discard that card and put it face up. Use the rest to form runs and sets.

The game follows an anticlockwise direction and players pick up a new card while discarding an existing one. The game stops when any one of them manages to get rid of all 13 cards in their hand.

Do keep in mind, that you can choose to fold your cards. But, you need to do that in the first round. You can add your cards to the bottom of the discard stack. You may also choose to fold during the game, which can be even more expensive. Folding at the start means you have to pay the winner 10 points. If you choose to fold after the game has started, then you will be forced to give 40 points.  In case, of the latter, the cards are kept aside and are not added to the stack.

Things to keep in mind while playing the card game Paplu:

1. You can only use one card at a time. If you use a card for a run, then you cannot use the same card to form a set during that round of play.

2. When there are two standard decks in play, you might get the same card. You can use them on different runs or sets. But, you cannot use them both to form a run or a set.

For example, you have two kings of diamonds and a king of clubs in your hand. You cannot combine them to form a set. You can create a set with one of the diamonds, the club and if you have a king from another suite.

3. Some people use Jokers as wildcards. In that case, you need to have at least one run or set without a joker. Such a set or a run is a ‘pure’ sequence.

4. You have to discard and pick a new card every turn.

5. 5. You cannot draw and discard the same card in one round.

6. 6. You meld your cards in your hand. You show your cards only when you have at least two runs or sets.

7. 7. If you wish to declare your melds and claim victory, you put your card face down on the discard pile.

8. 8. If the stockpile runs out at any given point during the game, the discard pile is shuffled to create a new stockpile. This may happen when there is one card in the discard pile, and a player does not want to choose that card.

9. 9. If everyone decides to pack apart from one person, that person is declared the winner. Others need to pay the winner according to when they decided to fold.

10. 10. If a player declares Paplu or Rummy after the first round, everyone else pays half for the deadwood in their hands.

11. 11. Hand-Rummy is a rare occasion in Paplu. But, it occurs from time to time. A player who gets 13 cards that can form runs and sets may call Hand-Rummy. The declaration must take place before they pick up their first card. Players who have played before the new winner have to pay twice the amount of deadwood points. Points payment remains unchanged for players who decided to pack or players who are yet to play during that round.

How does scoring work in the card game Paplu

In Indian Rummy, a player needs to have two valid sequences to go Rummy.

Face cards, i.e. Jack, Queen, King and Ace gets you 10 points each. The rest of the cards go with their pip value. So, a 7 of diamonds would be worth 7 points. If you are playing with Jokers, note that they are worth zero points.

Aces are the highest value card in Indian Rummy followed by King, Queen, and Jack. Once a player has declared Rummy, the rest of the players have to show their melds. Then the deadwood is counted up to assign everyone a score.

The dealer tallies up the deadwood cards only. These are the cards that are not part of any melds. The combined deadwood points earned by everyone else becomes part of the winner’s spoils.

The game continues till a certain score is reached, or everyone gets to play a certain amount of rounds.

You need the right balance of skill and luck to win Paplu games. You need to know when to pack or fold and when to call Rummy. If you declare Rummy within 2 to 3 card picks, it is a safe bet where your chances of winning are high.
